Each year the chamber encourages its members to take the Going for Green pledge to consider using environmentally friendly practices a part of their everyday business. They also ask organizations to submit how they are making sustainable lifestyle choices.
“It’s a community effort where the chamber promotes green choices, whether it’s with a non-profit or a for-profit business,” Executive Director Susan Cator said during the awards ceremony at Barrett Bookstore on Thursday night.
The Darien Nature Center was the winner of the nonprofit category. Cator said that it was selected because of its commitment to the Darien community in preserving the natural world.
Honorable mentions were also awarded to the Darien Community Association for its work with a bird sanctuary, and for its commitment to organic gardening. The Depot was also given an honorable mention for educating youth about the importance of environmental safety, and promoting recycling.
Amanda Smith Caterers won the Going for Green business award for its use of kitchen to table packaging, which reduces the waste of containers, and and limits the use of detergents and water, as well as for its use of locally farmed organic foods and its decision to begin composting this spring.
A key part of the Going for Green event each year is a contest among Darien High School graphic design students, who are asked to design a poster to promote environmentally sustainable practices. This year’s winner was Corey Frate, with second place going to Nicholas Gentle. The posters will be displayed in the windows of businesses around town to encourage shoppers, business owners and residents to think green.
